What To Do When You Have Locked Keys In Car
Locked Keys In Car We all have hectic lives these days and because of this, accidents such as getting locked out of the car is something that happens more and more often. Older cars were easier to jimmy if this happened but many of the newer cars are more difficult. This is good for reducing the chance of someone accessing the car that shouldn’t but it means that should we lock ourselves out that there’s no easy solution to getting in the car. Here we will take a look at what to do when you have locked keys in car.
Should You Try To Unlock The Door Without A Key?
If you find that you have locked your keys in the car and you are wondering if you should try to unlock the door on your own there are some considerations. If you have an older car it might be possible that you could use a clothes hanger to access the inside door lock or you may be able to use a rope with a loop on it in a similar way. With either the clothes hanger or the rope you would get those things through the window accessing the car where the glass and the weather stripping come together and push that through and lower it until it touches the door lock.
You would then work the clothes hanger or the rope so that the loop area goes over the head of the lock and then you would pull up. Many people have been able to do this successfully and yet most people find that they can’t quite get the loop of that clothes hanger or rope to quite get over the head of the lock in order to successfully unlock it. Even if they are able to do it it can often take quite a long time.
Another way is to use a clothes hanger to go past the weather stripping in the door itself and then get the hooked area of the clothes hanger to actually pull a lever located down in the door that unlocks it. This usually requires some knowledge of where the lock’s lever is located and again there are those that have done this successfully but the average person can’t.
Newer cars are made in a way that makes this considerably more difficult. Anyone who has a newer car will probably not be able to access their vehicle in this way. Even for those that have an older car, they might risk damaging it trying to unlock the door in this way. They could damage the weather stripping, they might scratch or chip the paint on their car, and it’s possible that they could even damage the lock itself.

Preventative Methods That Allow Access When You Have Locked Keys In Car
Although most of us think that locking the keys in the car is a bonehead move its one that many of us will make at one point or another. For this reason, it’s best if we prepare ourselves so that if or when it happens that we have a way to access our vehicle. Some simple ways to do this include having a spare key but this does take some planning. If you use one of the old methods of placing a spare key in a magnetic box that you place under the car this can work but leave your car vulnerable as some car thieves are aware of this method and might find that key. Even so, if you put it in an unlikely place that’s a little difficult to get to and yet is secure, then it might work.
Another idea is just simply to have a family member or a very close friend who has a spare key and could bring it to you in an emergency situation. This wouldn’t allow you to access the automobile immediately as the friend would need enough time to get to you but it would give you a way to get back into the vehicle when you have locked keys in the car. It also would mean that the key is safe.
Another idea would be to simply keep a spare key at the office or at your home. This would be safer than using a magnetic box under your car as thieves would not be able to access it but again it would mean that it’s not immediately available for use. Still, it would mean that if a family member or friend were available they could grab it from the office or from your home and bring it to you or you could simply arrange for transportation there and grab the key and return to the car and be able to enter it.
